Papadopulos-Eleopulos et al comment on the "seminal" Gallo papers:
... in May 1984, Gallo, Popovic and their colleagues published four papers in Science in which they claimed to have isolated another retrovirus from AIDS patients. The Gallo virus was called human lymphotropic virus-III (HTLV-III). On the 23rd of April 1984, at a Washington press conference held two weeks before the Science papers were published, Margaret Heckler, the then Health and Human Services Secretary, announced that Gallo and his co-workers had discovered the "probable" cause of AIDS and had developed a sensitive test to show whether the "AIDS virus" is present in blood. source...
POPOVIC.- The AIDS-researcher who became victimized
First in April 1984 Popovic and Gallo were ready to publish their manuscript about their laboratory findings considering HIV - at that time called HTLV-III. Popovic wanted to submit further expansions of the research. Gallo wanted to get the credit, because at the well directed press conference that was held April 23rd , eleven days ahead of the publication, Gallo was the big star of the show. In front of TV cameras and journalists Gallo was proclaimed by Health minister Margaret Heckler as the discoverer of the AIDS virus. Popovic was not among. He was in Florida. That it was the virus emanating from the French batch was to be revealed later. source...
No Scientific Proofs For The Existence Of "HIV"
This is, however, the first time that US Health representatives admit that in AIDS no specific Virus has ever been discovered. That there is simply no evidence that HIV is the cause of AIDS. And this 16 years after the then US Secretary of Health, Margaret Hekler on the 23rd April 1984 announced to the whole world the scientific discovery of a virus in connection with AIDS, also that an application had been made for patenting this "discovery", and, finally, that the US authorities had approved "HIV"-tests. source...
National Enquirer or Rational Enquirer?
23rd April 1984, and the National Academy of Sciences auditorium in Washington DC was packed with journalists and television crews abuzz with anticipation. US Health Secretary Margaret Heckler emerged and greeted the assembly, declaring: "Today we add another miracle to the long honour roll of American medicine and science. Today's discovery represents the triumph of science over a dreaded disease."
The miracle Heckler announced was that a team of virologists led by Dr Robert Gallo had isolated a virus that was apparently causing AIDS. This was a tremendous announcement and the enormity of Heckler's words, coming at a time when the climate of AIDS-induced fear was at its pinnacle, could not be overestimated. Speaking of Gallo's work as an all-American miracle discovery, Heckler reminded the public of the gratitude it owed to medicine for triumphing over this dreaded disease. source...
